ABC disposes of these end-of-life vehicles at no cost to the Village.

Known for its leadership in safe environmental practices, ABC Auto Parts has received numerous accommodations for its environmental stewardship from agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) through its participation in the ARA’s Certified Automotive Recycler (C.A.R.) program and by the Auto and Truck Recyclers of Illinois for its participation in the Illinois Green Certified Automotive Recycler (Illinois Green Car) Program. To become Illinois Green CAR certified, a recycling facility is required to meet 27 environmental, safety, business, and licensing standards. Leading recyclers working in cooperation with state and federal regulatory agencies and environmental groups developed these standards. Each facility is audited to verify that the standards are being met. Certified Illinois recyclers are nationally recognized through the ARA CAR program, and they are eligible to participate in the coveted Gold Seal program. ABC Auto Parts also participated in an ELV Fluid Loss Research Protocol that provides insights to the fluid loss as a result of processing an end-of-life vehicle. The study is designed to determine the quantity of fluids unable to be collected due to the design of component reservoirs. This analysis will be used to better assess the input to the waste stream of residual fluids, the magnitude of the problem, points of entry of the fluids, and possible mitigation solutions. Employing a diverse staff of over 70 individuals at its Riverdale, Illinois location, ABC Auto Parts extends its reach globally by working with automotive parts distributors in Accra, Ghana, Mexico City and Mazatlan, Mexico. While these partnerships are in the early stages of development, ABC Auto Parts is providing economic and job opportunities to these emerging market.

Automotive Recycling Industry and Environmental Impact

In addition to conserving natural resources, automotive recycling plays an important role in reducing air and water pollution, and solid waste generation. Automotive recyclers must abide by stringent local and national regulations on dealing with waste generated by salvaged automobiles. Many individual automotive recyclers have also instituted their own unique programs to further reduce the potential effects of harmful materials to their businesses and communities. Automotive recycling has evolved into a sophisticated market and technology-driven industry that constantly changes to keep abreast of innovations in automotive technology and manufacturing techniques. Rather than merely crushing wrecked, abandoned, and mechanically disabled motor vehicles, today's modern recycling facilities have a definitive operational scheme that maximizes the vehicle's true market value, all the while providing an economic and environmental benefit to the community. In a typical modern recycling business, inoperative motor vehicles are brought into a facility where the hazardous and recyclable fluids are properly drained. Undamaged parts are then dismantled from the vehicle, cleaned, tested, inventoried, and stored in a warehouse until sold. The remaining vehicle hulk is then prepared for scrapping. Automotive recyclers are a valuable source for economical and often hard to find used motor vehicle replacement parts. Professional auto recyclers use computer and satellite communication systems that enable for direct inventory assessment as well as locate parts across town or across the continent, by simply entering the appropriate data into their computer system. This technology allows recyclers to maximize their inventories and provide quick and efficient service to their customers.
